What is an Internet Exchange Point?

An Internet Exchange Point (IXP) is a physical hub where network providers connect and exchange traffic, helping ISPs reduce costs, improve service quality, and lower latency by keeping local traffic within a confined area. IXPs enhance internet resilience through redundant routes that avoid congestion. They provide a neutral, local network using switching equipment in carrier-neutral data centers, often interconnected by dark fiber for redundancy.
